Macro 4, a global vendor of document technology, today joined the environmental efforts of its customer Nationwide Building Society.

Nationwide has offered its credit card customers the alternative to forego printed statements and receive their account information online. The building society estimates if all customers take up the offer, 40 million sheets of paper can be saved in one year.

This facility is based on Macro 4’s award-winning Columbus technology which has previously provided online access to over 200 million documents in Nationwide's branches, call centres and administrative offices.  By extending this paperless access to Nationwide customers, Macro 4 offers not only lower customer service costs, but drastically expands its capability to save paper from being wasted.

Jeremy Wood, divisional director at Nationwide said: "Nationwide is committed to reducing the impact the Society has on the environment. We have been using recycled paper on all our marketing literature and monthly statements for over three years so electronic statements are a natural step for us. With the help of our customers opting to view their statements online, we can take another step to improve our environment."

Laurent Berns, Chief Executive of the DMS division at Macro 4 said:"Following such a long and sustained relationship with Nationwide it is a real vote of confidence in the Macro 4 technology that it is enabling such a high-profile and customer-facing initiative.  We hope it proves very successful and drives high volumes of customers to choose the greener online alternative for their statements."
